Welcome to the Pearls of Photography Mini Course! In this section of the website you will find a general summary of what we discussed each week. This week we learned about the parts of the camera as well as camera controls. We focused on how your ISO setting, Shutter Speed, and F-Stop all work together and how that effects your image. HW: Vision Boards describing what kind of photographer they want to be Week 2: Presentation and DemonstrationAugust 18, 2017
This week I presented my vision board to Jaliyah and Micaiah. We also were introduced to influential professional black and white photographers. We learned about low key and high key and turning color pictures to black and white pictures. We practiced how to take pictures using the manual setting and changing the shutter speed and aperture only to see how it effects the images at Sarah P Duke Gardens. We took portraits, macro photos and landscape style pictures. HW: Read Gabrielle Jordan's entrepreneur book. Next week: Using the photographs from today's session, convert them to black and white and then print them out. Once they are printed, placed them side by side with the same color picture and choose your favorite and explain why. Week 3: On the road and hands on TrainingAugust 26, 2017
Today the girls photographed a 2 year old birthday party and a family reunion using the techniques learned in week 1 and week 2. They learned action shots, portraits, macro, and night photography today. HW: Continue to read assigned text. week 4: editing and framiNgSeptember 2, 2017
This week Jaliyah was out of town for the holiday weekend. Her assignment was to be the photographer at her cousin's birthday party while she was gone. When she returned we edited the pictures and added text. Makiya and I worked on editing this week. She went over cropping, contrasting, and focusing. She also added text and frames to her pictures. Hw: Continue to read and edit pictures in preparation for their graduation in a few weeks. week 5: WeDdings and ButterfliesSeptember 8-9, 2017
This wee Jaliyah worked a wedding with me. She was the videographer. She did a wonderful job. This week she learned how difficult it can be to be a wedding photographer. Overall I think she enjoyed herself. Makiya and I went to the Museum of Natural Science in Raleigh, NC this week to see the butterfly room. While we were there we got to see the sloth in rare form. The sloth came out for his personal Photoshoot just for us. We had a blast and I think Makiya likes taking pictures of animals. HW: Continue to edit pictures for graduation next week. Week 6: graduation!!Wow!! Time flies! Hundreds have people have donated to our fundraising efforts to get the girls both DSLR cameras. They want to start their own photography business called J and M productions! I am so proud of them. Over the last six weeks they have learned so much!! I pray that this graduation celebration impacts the community in a mighty way! I pray that more young women get inspired to see their unique value in the world and in their neighborhoods. Amen.
